Sports Tourism, at work in our own back yard…

Castanet reports that the Penticton Wrestling club has secured the Feb 2010 BC High School Wrestling Championships.  Great news, and a helpful addition to a tourist town in February!  Congrats on the winning effort by the Penticton Club.  Couple of notes to those who think of Summerland as a “tourist town” though…

1) Penticton Chamber has WORKED on DEVELOPING and IMPLEMENTING a PLAN to assist in attracting this kind of event.

2) Penticton has more than one Hotel to host visitors coming to this kind of sports tourism event.

3) 500 High School competitors is not any kind of economic windfall, it is a welcome addition building upon other successful sports tourism efforts within said PLAN.

As a side note, Canfor Corp. re-opened its Quesnel sawmill in B.C.’s Interior in the summer of 2010 to deliver lumber exclusively to China, putting 155 workers back on the job.
