Community Cafe promotional: “For people to collaborate in initiating significant community change, they must, first and foremost, talk to each other”.
I confess I sure didn’t much like it when the first speaker at my first table started with her opinion: “Well, Summerland needs to protect itself from all those greedy developers and Realtors that will ruin this town. All they care about is money”.
This of course was a direct criticism against who I am…a Realtor (proud of it!) and a developer (proud of it!).

Kind of threw me off and had my mind racing to hear that right at the start! I was slammed personally by someone who I don’t even know. And, trust me, with a name like Murphy, I did think of a quick response or two! (Obviously, I was glad I didn’t speak out at the time.)
However, the lady’s opinion did serve to chrystallize what Chief Louie had talked about at his Summerland presentation: Generally, people who are aggressive with their negative opinions are not the people who actually contribute much to a community.
Truly, everyone is entitled to state their opinion, but in Chief Louie’s leadership experience, he found the real truth behind hearing an aggressive opinion comes by asking within yourself: “What does this opinionated person actually contribute?”

That question was resoundingly answered for me, when the opinionated woman told the table that she actually was not from Summerland, she was only visiting, but had been invited by someone “who certainly feels the same way”! By definition, then, it seems she would not be contributing much to Summerland since she was “just visiting!”.

I understand that there will be some who will love to take the leap to say “Wow when someone’s opinion disagrees with Murphy, he says they contribute nothing”. Umm, no, not at all.

My point is that I do sincerely believe that we need to make discernments when critical, negative opinions are expressed. Summerland needs to ask the question: “Hey, what does that opinionated person actually contribute?”

Of course it’s part of the process that opinions are stated freely (or yelled and even screamed). But, now more than ever, if Summerland is going to be able to take some steps forward, we must ask the question: “What does this opinionated person actually contribute?”
Some fine examples are the letters to the editor that find fault with pretty much everything! Free country, write the letters, but let’s as readers be responsibe to consider the source: What does that critical person ever actually DO or contribute?”

And, if the answer is “gee, I don’t know” or worse, “they never contribute much of anything”…well, consider the source.
Barbara Thorburn stated in the Review: “All communities need leaders,” she said. “We need people who have a vision and can speak for us and who have the best interests of the community first.”
That statement comes from someone who has contributed, from someone who did do something. And doesn’t that sound incredibly different than “Summerland needs to protect itself from all those greedy developers and Realtors that will ruin this town. All they care about is money.”
Just some examples, but, when you hear those negative, critical voices cry out for attention, please, quietly ask: What do they contribute? What do they DO to try to help this town? And then, consider the source.

Patrick Murphy

PS Remember Chief Louies call: Buck up or Shut up!

“small business the backbone of provincial economy”

The following info is taken from an article appearing in The Northern View, Prince Rupert news.

More British Columbians received wages last year from small business than anywhere else in Canada, and small business represents 30 per cent of the province’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

The Small Business Profile has been produced for over a decade by Western Economic Diversification Canada, the Province and BC Stats, and is released to coincide with British Columbia’s Small Business Month, held in October, and Canada’s Small Business Week.

I read this on a f/b item from Summerland CROSS FIT TRAINER Brent Hayter

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:-Knowing when to come in out of the rain; – Why the early bird gets the worm;- Life isn’t always fair; – And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies, don’t spend more than you can earn and adults, not children, are in charge. His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife Discretion, his daughter Responsibility, and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, I’m A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

No wonder some poor innocent BCREA Economist can’t quite figure us out! What a town! What a market. I’ve sold real estate in 3 different provinces in each of the last 4 decades and I can attest…this is one unique mix of “people with real estate licenses”, very low employment opportunities, age restricted housing, hard hit economy, a “tourist town” with only one hotel, an agricultural based economy that just closed its packing plant, a vocal group opposed to tourism based golf resort, an ex Mayor who was in charge of water upgrades who STILL is writing letters to the editor condemning Summerland water system, huge town hall meetings when a land parcel takes a mini step toward the slight possibility of maybe subdividing, vocal movement against the building of an RCMP building, and on and on…and the local reporter wants a big city economist to explain! Ha, go figger.

I find that comparing and contrasting different News Headlines will often unveil important and very telling issues in our society…for example, while one identifiable group (by their loud, whiny, attention seeking media “persona”) complains about a Mayor’s lack of attendance at a PARADE…

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2011/06/23/keith-calderwood-peterbor_n_882864.html

another group, silent, not media savvy and without agenda, quietly goes about their job, risking their lives to protect us, and to protect the rights of people to complain when a Mayor won’t attend a parade…

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/toronto/foes-blast-ford-over-decision-to-skip-pride-parade/article2070981/

This is our Canada in 2011. An elected Mayor is criticised by “victims” (get it?) because he has slighted them by his choice to uphold his (how ironic is this?) family tradition of holiday and will miss their parade celebrating their choices.

Further to the above discussion, today, June 30 2011 I read in the Globe and Mail an article in which the Mayor is said, by his absence, to be “legitimizing hate”. So, now, if you do not DISPLAY SUPPORT, you are LEGITIMIZING HATE. Get it?

1) Clearly the mob mentality has turned on the perpetrators of the riot.

2) I am troubled by the videos for many different reasons…but one keeps rising in my mind above all the troubling images: What did the police actually DO that night?

And here is a commentary I read that kind of sums up I think…

“what is becoming of policing in Canada?

Last year officers in Toronto were ordered not to take action as hoodlums burned police cars and looted stores on some of the most prestigious streets in the city.

A day later, instructions were to kettle hundreds of citizens for hours in the rain.

Police brass said that they needed to question every person in order to determine who were the criminals –and yet many persons detained in the rain were not ever approached by the police. A year later, still no accountability, and no answers.

In Vancouver, cars were burning in the streets, stores were looted, and very little, if any, action taken. Today, police are asking the public to send in pictures so they can try to identify the culprits!

Is this what policing in Canada has come to? Let the thugs take over and then ask the public for clues? If the rank-and-file officers in Vancouver are anything like those in Toronto, they are embarrassed by their leadership. We need answers, and accountability.”

Which is which?

Read this and decide: Is this happening in Iran, in Syria, or is this happening in Canada?

Government workers are being paid to inspect and monitor daycares to look through rhymes, songs & books for offensive content.

These government workers are trained and paid to visit daycares to ensure that traditional songs are censored to remove certain references, words and content.

Iran? Probably, I would assume so anyway. And most likely in Syria as well I would think…but… wake up, ladies and gentleman, this is really a true story about your country, too! Canada.

Scheduled to take effect Wednesday, this policy would leave it up to inspectors to determine when the line between culture and religion is crossed. Knowing this is taking place in Canada, you probably know by now, that this effort is about keeping all reference to “God” out of daycares. Government monitors will ensure there is no mention of miracles or acts of God and so forth.

So, tax dollars will ensure that, for example, Noah’s Ark is appropriately censored: “The story about the flood is not a problem, but the fact that God spoke to Noah and told him to build the Ark is religious, and under the directive you can’t do that.”

And, obviously, if an unscheduled inspection by the government worker discovers a Nativity Scene, it will be removed forthwith…unclear on what the penalty is as of yet…I would imagine that in Iran or Syria, the infidel offender would be beaten, or taken away or disappear. But in Canada, probably just a fine or close the daycare and such, eh?

You get the picture here in “our” Canada now, right?

Here’s the article:
